corns2Gareth Bale of Real Madrid has undergone a series of medical tests to ensure his toe is not broken. Bale was sent to Sanitas La Moraleja after suffering a blow to his right toe during a game in Gijon. While the x-rays revealed Bale had no broken bones, the club has taken the matter seriously to quickly rule out injury. Bale has since been preparing for a game against Betis.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns contact one of our podiatrists of The Podiatry Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

·         throbbing pain

·         swelling

·         bruising on the skin and toenail

·         the inability to move the toe

·         toe appears crooked or disfigured

·         tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

New Zealand Study Finds Tomatoes Trigger Gout

toenail fungus7According to a research conducted in New Zealand, where there is the most gout cases compared to anywhere else in the world, tomatoes may trigger gout attacks. In a survey consisting of 2,051 New Zealand citizens it was noted that tomatoes along with seafood, alcohol, and red meat are consistent triggers of gout. N. Lawrence Edwards, MD who was not directly involved with the research states that although this knowledge helps gout sufferers control their attacks, food is just one factor in gout management. “People can’t go on a restrictive enough diet so that their uric acid will be lowered to the point that they’re not at risk for gout flares,” he mentions.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you have any concerns regarding gout, consult with Dr. Glen R. Wilensky and Dr. Julie A. Greenwood from The Podiatry Center. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

What is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

toenail fungus7The American Podiatric Medical Association recently published a study revealing that much of this nation’s foot pain goes untreated. In a survey of 1,000 people over the age of 18, 77% reported experiencing foot pain, but only a third of those claim they would see a podiatrist. Half of the participants with foot pain say that the pain has hindered walking, exercising, playing with grandchildren, and other daily activities.

Among the group who sought podiatric help, 88% reported a quick diagnosis and 76% received treatment that eliminated the problem. A third of the group said that their visits to the podiatrist exposed other health concerns, such as diabetes, circulatory issues, and nerve issues.

"It's not surprising to see how many people are affected by foot pain, when survey results show that we view our feet as the least important body part in terms of our overall health and wellbeing," said AMPA President Frank Spinosa. "Our feet are literally and figuratively the furthest things from our minds."

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Seek the assistance of one of our podiatrists of The Podiatry Center. Our doctors will provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

What is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek care of a podiatrist when they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as: heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • physical therapy

  • drugs

  • perform surgery on lower extremity fractures

  • orthotic inserts or soles

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
